AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes
I love a sunburnt country / A land of sweeping plains / Of ragged mountain ranges / Of droughts and flooding rains / I love her far horizons / I love her jewel-sea / Her beauty and her terror / The wide brown land for me / ~ Dorothea Mackellar (1885-1968)

Icarus ~ Drowning Wings on Fire

Pretend to have wings
Reckless exhileration
Eternal waxworks

Drifting quietly
Universal predator
Icarus still burns

NOTE: The reference in the last haiku is to the asteroid Icarus which came "close" to a collision course with Earth in 1968.
It is expected Icarus may pay a return visit!
So the poem depicts two Icarus personas -
one of legend and one of...

P.S. Icarus must be in the air.
Roland D Yeomans at Writing in the Crosshairs has presented a beautiful post called
The Icarus Wind
He begins:
It's a lovely song by the equally lovely {and evocative} Thea Gilmore. The Icarus Wind is also the spirit which sweeps us up and hurls us into the misty clouds where our dreams live.
It is a dangerous realm. There is no promise of success. And there is no safety net to catch us should we fall...
And then he creates a lively "dialogue" of the Icarus journey of getting writing published!

I love the collage-but not the idea of Icarus the asteroid which I didn't know about! Hopefully it will avoid us!

I too find myself hoping that the latter-day Icarus does not follow the path of the mythical man, and tumble down to the earth!

Beautiful post. Thank you for mentioning mine on your blog.

The picture is lovely and haunting.

One day something will collide with the earth. It's not a matter of if only of when. So we should treasure each moment, each friend, each flash of beauty. As I treasure the photos and poetry I find here, Roland

Great image and a sharp reminder of our vulnerability.

Lovely processed digital photos - It has terrific depth and quality. The words and narrative that follows are full of wisdom, wonder and what-if. So very nice.

Your visual collage puts me in mind of the seabirds currently being coated in oil off the US coast. Quite powerful.

And I enjoyed your haiku duo.
