Tasmanian Cheese Signs

Cheeses from the Australian island of Tasmania feature on our supermarket dairy shelves.
King Island is offshore from Tasmania in Bass Strait but still is regarded as Tasmania.

Rarely are boat sheds an orange colour.
But this boat shed at Dromana beach likes to be different.

I'm proudly orange

I'm a bold statement

Waiting! Waiting!

Today - Saturday 26th January - is Australia Day.
Here is a glimpse of some characters (last Australia Day 2012) lined up in a queue for a free breakfast at the Dromana pier celebrations.
Clearly they have means of being entertained while they wait their turn.

Surf Rake

This surf rake grades/cleans the sands.
It is usually active early in the mornings on Dromana beach - especially in the summer months.
It is dark green + an odd shade of pale greenish yellow.
But at least the light on the left side is distinctly yellow!

If only we could
Rake the flotsam and jetsam
Of our daily lives

Double Spirit

At first, there seems to be nothing remarkable about this photo.
It's just a scenic shot on a sunny day of the lovely Spirit of Tasmania ferrying cars and passengers from Melbourne to Devonport in Tasmania.
(I took this shot from Dromana beach across Port Philip Bay!)
Not till I uploaded my photos of this ship did I notice something quite unexpected in a few of them!
A reflection of the boat's name captured far across the bay!

Fire ravaged island
Spirit of Tasmania
Proudly keeps sailing

P.S. I have been following the summer fire tragedy in Tasmania closely.
Dunalley, south of Hobart, was essentially wiped out.
HERE is a recent story that brought me to tears and prompted me to post this photo and haiku.

Not Today Mr Death!

On Christmas Day 2010, at the Portsea Hotel, we found this poor bird's feet tangled in what seemed to be fine string (maybe discarded fishing line).
It was fluttering frantically in a bush.
My son and husband carefully held the bird and untangled it.
We were so pleased to see it fly away free!

Tunnel Rat

This sign was on the side window of a car parked in the Dromana Hub Shopping Centre carpark.
I had no idea what it meant, so I did some Googling.
I was shocked!
The sign referred to a unique group of Australian men who served in Vietnam.
The members of the Field Troops listed on our banner (3 Field Troop and 1, 2 &3 Troop of 1 Field Squadron) performed a unique role in Vietnam, and payed a heavy price for it. These men are the only Engineers who went out on four and six week-long operations with the Infantry and Armoured units. They fought alongside the Infantry plus they performed their additional tasks of mine and booby trap detection and clearing, bunker and tunnel searching and demolition, and bomb disposal. Of the 36 Royal Australian Engineers killed in Action in Vietnam, 35 came from the Field Troops (the one other KIA was an Engineer posted to the “Training Team” (AATTV).
Ref: Tunnel Rats
These engineers were withdrawn from Vietnam in November-December 1971.
More details of their activities in the Vietnam War are HERE!

St George the Martyr

This is St George the Martyr Anglican church at Queenscliff on the Bellarine Peninsula.
The church was designed by Albert Purchas and built in 1863-6.
Purchas also designed the St George Uniting Church in St Kilda (1877-1880); was architect and surveyor to the Melbourne General Cemetery and designer of the Boroondara (Kew, Camberwell and Hawthorn areas) Cemetery from 1864.
In 1889, Purchas designed the cast iron entrance gates to the Boroondara Cemetery.
NOTE: It is claimed that St George church at Queenscliff is a pastiche of the 12th-13th century medieval church of St Giles in Skelton village north of Yorkshire. Ref: HERE

St George's Old School Hall

This is the old school hall of St George the Martyr Anglican church at Queenscliff on the Bellarine Peninsula.
The hall, designed by Albert Purchas, (as was the church), was built in 1870 just after the church of 1863-6.
