You put forth a little slice of Australian history to educate the rest of us, and judging by the comments from others, it did manage to open a lot of eyes and spark much thought. Thank you for that Gemma.
I wonder how effective that old luggage disinfectant really was, and what they were trying to keep out. If this was from pre-antibiotic days, I can understand the fear.
Did they only treat the immigrants like potential carriers, though, or did they check everyone on the boat? If you're trying to keep diseases out, then you should check everyone, even citizens returning from their travels. To do otherwise is prejudice.
That was an incredibly moving, unique take on this weeks promt. It was poetic, stirring, and moving in it's simplicity. I can't wait to read more of your work!
