AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes

AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes
I love a sunburnt country / A land of sweeping plains / Of ragged mountain ranges / Of droughts and flooding rains / I love her far horizons / I love her jewel-sea / Her beauty and her terror / The wide brown land for me / ~ Dorothea Mackellar (1885-1968)

Four Faces of Living

Monday Poetry Potluck #16 ~ Celebrations and Festivities
~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here are 4 cameo glimpses of the essence of celebration and festivity, without the baubles and the glitter.
2 everyday sporting experiences frame what was and what may be.
The 4 poems (separated by the icon bells) may work as a holistic, seasonal cycle, or perhaps just one rings with your music.
If you like to dig a little, there are levels in these poems.
But if you don't have the time or the energy, the poems have surface colours you may like.
Here are poems for everyone and anyone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Fishing
Sometimes the endless untangling of lines
Sometimes the small ones
Tossed back till
Another day
Sometimes the yarn of
The one that got away
Sometimes
(And only sometimes)
The mighty catch
The trophy to take home

Strange
The celebration of fishing is
Not about trophies
The real joy of fishing is
Fishing

When it's the festive season for
Changing of the guard
Yesterday becomes
Time on ice
Rough and smoothe textures
Preserved

Often
It's then we see
The glistening beauty of trinkets
The small moments

When it's the festive season for
Changing of the guard
Tomorrow becomes
Time in the wings
Like a recipe waiting
Waiting for ingredients to gather
To mix
To bake
To chill
To be
Presented

Cricket
Sometimes the batter
Sometimes the bowler
Sometimes the yarn of
The one that got away
Sometimes
(And only sometimes)
From way out in left field
The catcher scores
The mighty catch
The trophy to take home

Strange
The celebration of cricket is
Not about trophies
The real joy of cricket is
Cricket

Truly love that fishing poem! I never care if I catch a thing (would prefer not to), but it is beautiful to be on the lake. Very nice.

I love that you started and ended with reminders that it's not about the game... it's about having fun while playing! :o)

Whatever the game, it's being in the moment, enjoying the surroundings, enjoying relationships. It's not about the competition(sometimes). Enjoyed the poems.

True joy in any sport is in the play itself, never in the win or the trophy, those simply become the memories...
