AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes

AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes
I love a sunburnt country / A land of sweeping plains / Of ragged mountain ranges / Of droughts and flooding rains / I love her far horizons / I love her jewel-sea / Her beauty and her terror / The wide brown land for me / ~ Dorothea Mackellar (1885-1968)

Corella Critters

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ Short billed corella (sometimes called little cockatoo) who often hangs with the big guys round our verandah in the Dromana Hills, Mornington Peninsula.
He is the only one of his kind in the flock.
Strangely, he seems to be a bully, and when he wants some particular food, the big cockatoos keep their distance.
They even get out of the way when he walks along our verandah railing.

Bossy corella
Circus of crazy critters
Little clown mascot

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ At Cranbourne, just east of the Mornington Peninsula, flocks of the long-billed corellas like to graze in the large open grassy areas.
Here is a comparison between the two types of corellas.

Distance Breeds Beauty

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ Crow on a school lamp post

Writer's Island prompt ~ Coercion
~

Absolutely nothing will coerce me to like crows ~
They linger
Like eyes of night
Watching for any chance to
Scavenge for
Scraps
Remnants
Of humanity
~
And yet
I find the vagrant artist in me
Is fascinated ~
Maybe feels
A dark love
For the distant beauty
Of their midnight silhouette
Strident
Against a blue sky
~

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ Corella feasting on the school grass
~

Absolutely nothing will coerce me to like
The ragged, doleful faces of corellas
Blotched with

Misplaced
Rouge
Round
Grey-blue
Parchment
Eyes
~
And yet
I find the sentimental dreamer in me
Enjoys watching
The distant charm of
A flock of corellas
Dancing
Stray waltzes
Like wild
White tears
Of snowdrops
~
