AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes

AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes
I love a sunburnt country / A land of sweeping plains / Of ragged mountain ranges / Of droughts and flooding rains / I love her far horizons / I love her jewel-sea / Her beauty and her terror / The wide brown land for me / ~ Dorothea Mackellar (1885-1968)

In the cockatoo days...

This photo of the sulphur-crested cockatoo was taken 3 years ago.
In those early days, their numbers were small.
But when up to 50-60 cockatoos chose to be fed here
- and they began destroying any wood around -
my husband was finally persuaded to stop feeding them.
I must admit, I miss taking their photo.

The pain of waiting
Waiting to be fed some seed
Waiting attention

Young Crimson Rosella

The crimson rosella, when young, has many shades of blotchy colours.
This video was taken this morning on our Dromana Hills verandah.

Colourful species
Always lively and chatty
Always together

I Love the Kookaburra

A kookaburra family regularly visits my Mornington Peninsula world.
Such friendly, knowing little characters.
The kookaburra (also known as laughing jackass) is part of the kingfisher family and is native to Australia and New Guinea.

Knowing character
The kookaburra magic
Reaches the spirit

So what is a friend
One who sings the earth for you
Echo of beauty
