Mailbox with a Message

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ Mailbox at Dromana Hills, Mornington Peninsula
NOTE: This is quite an important sign in Australia.
We have water restrictions now almost all year round.
This sign on a mailbox indicates that the owner does not draw on a metropolitan water supply (town water) but uses their own rainwater usually collected from the house roof.
The rainwater is usually stored in a water tank at the side or back of the house.
It is important to say this if gardens are being watered regularly.
People who water gardens for long periods of time using town water are liable for heavy fines.
This sign indicates the owner is a responsible water user!

I love the idea of a theme day for mailboxes! They are so fascinating.

I don't really understand the sign, but that is certainly an interesting mailbox.

althought my area is not subject to it as of yet we will be having water restrictions this year as even tho we had what seemed like a ton of raint to me, it was not heavy enough to refill the basins and thus are supposed to be conserving... many areas surrounding me are being fined for over use just as you say you folks are... with all the oceans that surround us how could it be that we are forever running short of water?????

it amazes and saddens me how we waste water here in the states - my neighbor has an outdoor faucet that has been dripping forever, another neighbors's lawn sprinklers go on for far too long

given our economic crisis I wish they would make AND actually collect fines for things like this - and then use for the money for green projects.

great post!

I worry about water incessantly and we don't have bans on water use (probably everyone should!). I used to have a well, but where I live now, we are affored "town" water and sewer services, though we have to pay fees quarterly. I use it as responsibly as I can and have since I was a college student many moons ago. I was appaled once while at someone's house, because they were cleaning their kitchen after we'd had dinner and the entire time they were away from the sink, they just let the water run and run at full speed. I had been a dinner guest, so it would've been rude to say or do something.

Water is a precious resource for many, though. Clean water. We really shouldn't take it for granted.

Thanks for participating again this week, Gemma. As always, a great post!

Best,
Gina

I am so sorry about the drought conditions in your country. There is a movement here to save rain water as we get enough rain to make it possible. I want to get one of the rain barrels and connect it to the gutters on our house and use that to water the flowers. I don't waste water on the lawn as so many do... Michelle

It must be hard living with water restrictions that harsh, it is a shame humans have come to this I suppose, so what do we leave our children? God bless all of you there down under!
