Mornington Cemetery is at Mount Martha on the Mornington Peninsula.
It has a beautiful park-like setting and is well tended!
Over Christmas, many memorials were carefully decorated to suit the season.
Even a tree trunk was hung with Christmas baubles.
Some small memorials are set in this garden walkway round a pergola.
Perhaps the most unusual memorial I saw was this one.
It just looks like a Christmas tree.
But closer inspection revealed that the wording of the plaque made the tree interesting.
It seemed to wish a general blessing on all who rested here.
Somewhere close to earth
Somewhere in a treed garden
Somewhere they live on

That is a delight, Gemma. I am so used to seeing cut flowers, and living perennials as decorations around and on grave markers. But had not thought to include the departed in regular earthly celebrations like this. When I see it like this, it seems such a regular thing to do.
The De Paul family site is touching in that, to me, it seems to indicated not just their sons and daughters, but ALL sons and daughters resting in the cemetery.
I love wild cemeteries, but I also love well-tended and thoughtful cemeteries. To remember the past, is to think ahead to our own future, and to be thankful.
Once again, thank you for your contribution to Taphophile Tragics. I appreciate your contribution.
I suppose that makes sense, doesn't it?
It's at those special times of the year that we particularly remember those we are missing.
A wonderful gesture at that special time of year that children love! I guess to the Mums and Dads who have their little ones resting here it would be - bitter sweet.
A great post Gemma.
How touching that tree. They must have had fond memories of christmas
A very happy New year to you Gemma
How kind that in the midst of their own sadness, they erected a memorial that included the grieving others of the cemetery.
The green simplicity of modern cemeteries is pleasing but somehow lacks the aged beauty of the older headstones. My Mum and Dad are in the lawn cemetery because my Dad reckoned there was too much family hoo haa keeping the old graves in good condition. But I wonder a 100 years hence whether the green lawns will be as neat.
That Christmas tree is special. A great way to remember the beloved. Beautiful photos.
Great shots.
One can't help but wonder what the story is behind these three people.
A lovely place to visit. I didn't know people decorated their graves at Christmas.
