Checking the mood of the water! I like that. We don't, of course, surf (being 100 years old give or take a few years ;>)), but living on or near the coast (here in Florida or in Oregon -- or traveling), we must check the water's mood (tides, the storms) is something we must do if we plan to boat or crab or beachcomb. -- I love that phase and will borrow it in conversation.
