sea pilots...

Sign at Queenscliff on the Bellarine Peninsula.
I do not really know why the name Queenscliffe is spelt both with and without an "e".
The ferry's name and the fort are spelt without an "e"
but the maritime museum and the region spell it with an "e".
According to the maritime museum's web page, the two spellings are historically based. ‘Queenscliff’ refers to the town and ‘Queenscliffe’ refers to the Borough which includes Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale.
However, places within Queenscliff seem to interchange between the two spellings.

NOTE: The name of the township 'Queenscliff' was first gazetted in June of 1853.
The 'Borough of Queenscliffe' was formed in May 1863.

Queenscliff Bell

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ Near Queenscliff pier on the Bellarine Peninsula, Port Phillip Bay, I found this sign.
(See the map at the top of this blog)
Queenscliff is not far from the opening to Bass Strait.
The opening is known as The Rip, a dangerous stretch of water recording quite a number of shipwrecks since the 19th century.

A Splash of Yellow on the Queenscliff to Sorrento Ferry

Pic By Gemma Wiseman ~ It's amazing how a single splash of yellow can stand out so much in a photo! I guess, having so much blue sky and blue water as a contrast helps!
This scene was taken on the Queenscliff to Sorrento ferry as it headed from the Mornington Peninsula across Port Phillip Bay toward Queenscliff, Bellarine Peninsula.

Secrets of Queenscliff Pier

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ This is an old old pier at Queenscliff, Bellarine Peninsula on Port Phillip Bay.
It leads to two amazing structures.
From a distance, they look quite plain and smallish.
(NOTE: This is NOT the pier for the Queenscliff-Sorrento ferry!)

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ This is the structure at the end of the line of shadows.
Inside looks far bigger than it appeared from the outside.
It seemed to be a giant walk through waiting terminal.
Knowing that this building was not far from The Rip ~ opening from Port Phillip Bay into Bass Strait ~ I wondered if this could have been a major shipping terminal.
I could not look into the other structure on the left.
The way to it was blocked.

This peninsula is opposite my Mornington Peninsula on Port Phillip Bay.
The two peninsulas circle the bay like embracing arms.

St George the Martyr

This is St George the Martyr Anglican church at Queenscliff on the Bellarine Peninsula.
The church was designed by Albert Purchas and built in 1863-6.
Purchas also designed the St George Uniting Church in St Kilda (1877-1880); was architect and surveyor to the Melbourne General Cemetery and designer of the Boroondara (Kew, Camberwell and Hawthorn areas) Cemetery from 1864.
In 1889, Purchas designed the cast iron entrance gates to the Boroondara Cemetery.
NOTE: It is claimed that St George church at Queenscliff is a pastiche of the 12th-13th century medieval church of St Giles in Skelton village north of Yorkshire. Ref: HERE

Black Hat

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ My black hat that I love to wear when out and about taking photos.
It reduces sun glare so that I don't struggle to see what I am taking!

Apostle of Queenscliff

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ Through an outside window, this photo was taken of a stained glass window in Apostle.
The Gothic building was a church, (built in 1888), but is now used as a boutique restaurant at Queenscliff on the Bellarine Peninsula.
Bellarine is the peninsula directly across Port Phillip Bay from the Mornington Peninsula.

Queenscliff Skies

Skies over Queenscliff on the Bellarine Peninsula (on the opposite side of Port Phillip Bay from my Mornington Peninsula)
The black lighthouse is the only one of its colour in Australia and it is said that it's one of only three in the world.
The notorious The Rip, just beyond the headland, opens into Bass Strait.
