AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes

AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes
I love a sunburnt country / A land of sweeping plains / Of ragged mountain ranges / Of droughts and flooding rains / I love her far horizons / I love her jewel-sea / Her beauty and her terror / The wide brown land for me / ~ Dorothea Mackellar (1885-1968)

First Governor General

This is a bronze statue (unveiled in 1911) of the First Governor General of Australia.
He arrived from Scotland as John Adrian Lewis Hope, the Earl of Hopetoun.
At first, he was a popular governor of Victoria from 1889-95.
He went back to Scotland and then returned to Australia as the first Governor General 1901-2.
At the end of his not so popular term, (he enjoyed spending money), he became the Marquis of Linlithgow.

a proud man
who felt important and
lost respect

The statue is on the entrance driveway to Government House in Melbourne, Victoria.

A Soul Set Free

This statue of a young girl - seeming to set a bird free - is at Mornington Cemetery on the Mornington Peninsula.
The figure is a slate grey but the bird is gold toned.

Like finding gold wings
Like breathing new life spirit
Like Galatea

For the love story of Pygmalion and Galatea see HERE!
And the name "Galatea" means sleeping love.

The figure is a little classical and yet there is a feeling that this statue may not have been poured from some reusable mould! It seems to have been specially cast for this grave.
(In wanderings of cemeteries, I have not seen a statue like this.)
The grave gives little clue. The headstone seems low and its nameless.

~

To hold a gift of Nature in your hand
To be at one with tiny breathing life
To see the charm of water souls on land
To feel the pulse of peace without the strife
Is knowing that the treasures of this earth
Are not the precious metals that we think
Nor are they gems that promise wealth re-birth
Nor are they guarantees that pain will shrink.
It's understanding that we share our space.
We live to give a richer life to all.
Our mansions are our inner hope and grace
Where Eden gardens blossom strong and tall.
And no one knows the universe within,
A secret world beneath a clay like skin.

Desperate Photographer

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ Western Port Festival 2011 was celebrated last weekend at Hastings on the Mornington Peninsula.
As the parade marched down the street, this photographer joined a statue for a better view and a better photograph!
She looked as if she was part of the statue!
That's different!

The Art of Neptune at Flinders

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ Amazing statue of Neptune on the front fenceline of a home at Flinders, Westernport Bay, Mornington Peninsula
P.S. I showed this view to prove that this was part of domestic garden art and not in a public garden.

FOOTNOTES: This is only a guess. But the sculpture looks as if it is based on a tree trunk. Maybe, when the house was built, a large tree required cutting down, leaving a flat topped stump. The upper part looks as if it is a kind of treated/stained balsa wood that has been shaped, added to the tree stump, and then the whole has been stained/painted over so it blends together. However this was done, the result looks very inventive!
