AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes

AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes
I love a sunburnt country / A land of sweeping plains / Of ragged mountain ranges / Of droughts and flooding rains / I love her far horizons / I love her jewel-sea / Her beauty and her terror / The wide brown land for me / ~ Dorothea Mackellar (1885-1968)

Flighty Green Rosella

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ A dusky green-coloured, shy variety of rosella in the Dromana Hills, Mornington Peninsula.
These birds, in the parrot family, are so hard to photograph because they are flighty.
In built up areas, it is rare that they come close to humans.
Usually it is just a flash of colour in the trees or sky.
But at Wilson's Promontory, further round the southern coastline in Gippsland, Victoria, the rosellas there will fly down looking for food and land on anyone's head or shoulders .
They are quite tame at Wilson's Prom.

Ruby Birds

These birds are a common sight on the Mornington Peninsula. They seem as much at home walking in grasses as flying to trees to have a good social chatter! When they dart in and out of trees, the flash of colour is quite magical!

A flash of rubies on the wing
Is like
A gleaming spark of passion
Longing
To sing
