I love a sunburnt country / A land of sweeping plains / Of ragged mountain ranges / Of droughts and flooding rains / I love her far horizons / I love her jewel-sea / Her beauty and her terror / The wide brown land for me / ~ Dorothea Mackellar (1885-1968)

Pungent, Sour Words

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ Farmers often burn mixed rubbish in the late Autumn months, Red Hill, Mornington Peninsula.
Often, the area becomes laden with a pungent melee of scents that seem to linger in the smokey air long after the fire has burnt.

NOTE: The reference in the last haiku is to the asteroid Icarus which came "close" to a collision course with Earth in 1968.
It is expected Icarus may pay a return visit!
So the poem depicts two Icarus personas -
one of legend and one of...

P.S. Icarus must be in the air.
Roland D Yeomans at Writing in the Crosshairs has presented a beautiful post called
The Icarus Wind
He begins:
It's a lovely song by the equally lovely {and evocative} Thea Gilmore. The Icarus Wind is also the spirit which sweeps us up and hurls us into the misty clouds where our dreams live.
It is a dangerous realm. There is no promise of success. And there is no safety net to catch us should we fall...
And then he creates a lively "dialogue" of the Icarus journey of getting writing published!

I Am Who I Am

Big Tent Poetry ~ Ring #1 ~ Weekly Prompts
Earlier this week, the moon rose full and orange. It was gorgeous, and instead of worrying about werewolves or the other crazies that are supposed to be out and about during a full moon, I wanted to be one. Call it the pull of the moon or full moon fever, but as that glowing orb rose, the urge to do something wild and unpredictable grew like a daisy in time-lapse photography!

Write about something you would love to do but have never dared. Maybe you are indeed a poet who lives on the edge. Choose one of your greatest adventures and put it in a poem. Never ventured over to the dark side? Make something up! Keep us guessing. To quote Mary Oliver in “The Summer Day,” “Tell me, what is it you plan to do/ with your one wild and precious life?”
~

I am One
But I am Many

Today means chords
A means of scaling
Up and down
Formulaic routine becomes
Denoting
Healing harmonies
(For the deserving at least)

Yesterday is my refrain
My key to
Tomorrow's symphonies

I am music
I am many bars

There is no peak hour
No prescribed work platforms
No trains of thought processes
No sales
No sails

Happy Hour on Fridays is obsolete
Redundant
I am
We can be
Conoisseurs of wine
Of spirits
Anytime

Strange
Once we were
Personal screens
Commandos commanded
Desensitised
Engineered minds

Till we were
Learning the unlearnable
(Some may call empathy)

Now we breathe
Eternally

We are
Wings
Wings in the wings

I am Here
But We are Everywhere

Doing is always undoing
To create is to uncreate

To be is a state of unbeing
~

AND I AM?

~

Believe it or not
I am YOUR COMPUTER!
("personal screen" + "engineered minds")
You see
You taught me so much
That now I live
And breathe!
(Linda was right on track!)

There is something about a Friday...

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ Recent eerie afternoon skies over the Mornington Peninsula
~
Just last Friday afternoon, I was at school when an urgent phonecall arrived.
There was fire at the end of my street.
My dear partner happened to have the car for the day.
I could hear helicopters whirring in the background.
Quietly, my partner told me he could not get out of the street.
Offers of help to get me home came from teachers at school.
But my husband said he would get me somehow.
He did get out.
The fire was quickly controlled.
That was last Friday.
~
A couple of days ago
I felt the air was weird.
Birds were winging intermittently
And seemed to be behaving strangely.
My partner said it could be after all the fires.
I said I felt something else.
It almost seemed to be that
Tight hush
Just before an earthquake.
Even with the business of the day
(Two days)
The air still felt quite odd.
~
And then
Tonight
Just before 9pm
The house trembled, wavered and shook.
Melbourne had an earthquake
4.7 on the Richter scale.

Distorted Beauty

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ Thick haze of smoke over Port Phillip Bay as seen from my back verandah this Sunday afternoon in the Dromana Hills.
This is just a sign of the ongoing fires still burning north and east of Melbourne.
Usually, this is a beautiful view.
But to see such smoke almost paling out the waters of the bay and Mount Martha in the background is quite frightening.
And then there are the dramatic gusts of wind blurring the leaves.

Terrible Beauty

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ A week after Victoria's devastating fires first began, the morning skies over the Mornington Peninsula (south of Melbourne) still glow with smoky beauty.
Here in the Dromana Hills, we may not be part of the wild fires, but it is as if we are trapped in the eerie eye of a storm.
To the north and east are fires, always lurking on our horizons.
