You're right. It is hard to be anything else but locked in hunger when one experiences famine.
Very strange choice of words 'coated in hunger', but maybe I do not understand it very well, because English isn't my maiden language.
As I see the other comments ... I think it's something normal to say 'coated in hunger'.

The last line--a powerful one--makes me think of skin. How can you run away from your own skin? How can you run from hunger?
