Hidden Agenda of Smoke

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ Hastings on Westernport Bay, Mornington Peninsula
In the background (click to enlarge) you can see the shapes of refineries and a hint of flame and smoke.
It could be a picturesque marina...

One Single Impression #57 ~ Smoke
~

Where there's scents of smoke
Curling wisps of glowing flame
Fire burns secretly
~

Where cloud is grey white
Still grey white on sunny days
Smoke leers knowingly

Hi Gemma, I have been missing you for a while. Your haiku verses remind me of the way young people smoke cigarettes.
When they are around home or other adult figures they are pretty secretive. Then with their peers they smoke like they are big stuff.
Been there, done that. Have you? I quit over 34 years ago.
Thanks. It's those secretly burning fires that can become a wild fire real fast.

I recall as a child working in the yard with my grandmother and watching her burn leaves.

In the winter time, we would sit in rockers in front of a fireplace in her kitchen watching the logs burn and the smoke swirling up the chimney.

I always loved the times my Mom would let me go visit with my grandma.

Smoke has it's place, a necessary evil for the many. Unfortunately, it does obscure a lovely view for some.

Nice work Gemma. From the news I guess Australia has seen its share of smoke and not necessarily burning secretly.

Very nicely crafted, and unveils something more sinister behind what can look so harmless, pretty even.

everything burns if there's too much of it...

thank you for these and the photos-

is it early autumn there?

Your picture and your verses hint at darker problems. The old saying may be where there's smoke there's fire, but today we might say, where there's fire and smoke there's CO2, and that is the hidden danger!

Gemma, I share your anxiety about this type of burning. The image of fires burning secretly is a strong one.

It does have the power to leer, doesn't it? A spirit, to be sure!

burning secretly - leers knowingly. Powerful words. Nice work!

When I was young we tried to sneak away and smoke, I didn't care for it after my secret was discovered, and my butt got a reminder not to do it again ..... ghostly smoke that leers has always scared me.

Nice work.

"Fire burns secretly"- owerful words. Great photography... we have the same issues of refineries and factories and such along the Indiana beaches of Lake Michigan.

hi gemma, haven't been by in awhile... have missed your photos... especially so of the sea and sky.. when i was younger i lived near the sea and lived across from a huge refinery... there was a smoke stack and everyday there was either fire spouting and shaking the neighborhood or the beast was quiet... one day we had a lightning storm and blew up one of the tanks... thank you for the recall...
