Kookaburras blend amazingly well into the textures of the bark.
I have shown kookaburras on our verandah, but kookaburras usually spread their laughter around from high in a gum tree.
The Laughing Kookaburra, 'Dacelo novaeguineae', is a familiar Australian carnivorous bird of the Kingfisher family, well known for its call. Previously known as the Laughing Jackass it is now best known by its aboriginal name. ~ Avian Web

Kookaburra sits in an old gum tree. Merry, merry king of the bush is he.
Laugh Kookaburra, laugh, Kookaburra gay your life must be.
When I was kid we sang that song many times in school. They say that some of the jungle background sounds in the old Tarzan movies are filled in with the Kookaburra call. I've never heard on so I don't know for sure. Nice photos.
Great shots Gemma and I've learned something new today - that they are a member of the Kingfisher family. Now I know this it seems so obvious because the head shape is so similar to the Kingfishers I'm more familiar with. :)
That is a cute bird and it is no wonder that even children's songs are about him! Thanks for these wonderful pictures and information from the other end of the world.

You captured some wonderful shots and thanks for sharing your beautiful poetry.
I used to sing the same song as Andy did! It was the first thing I thought of when I read your post. And now I know what they look like. Beautiful shots, and they show off the lovely colouring if the birds so well.
A very cute bird - and very difficult to spot in that first photo!
I used to sing the Kookaburra song too - it's a favourite with the Scouting fraternity, too.
The camouflage is wonderful - I had to look really closely to see the bird in your first photograph. Very smart feathers he has.
A lively little bird - love the way he looks. I'd heard of the bird but have never seen photos so delightful. Thanks!
Kookaburras are great. I have visited family in Australia a few times and always love to hear them. A
That is one neat bird that I've never heard of!
ABC Wednesday
I remember singing the Kookaburro song with kids! Have never seen the actual bird tho!
Great post!
I learned the song Andy mentioned, and to which you title alludes, when I was in 4th grade in the US!
On behalf of the ABC Wednesday team, thank you!
