Like a Lotus

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ Unusual flower in my garden, Dromana Hills, Mornington Peninsula.
The centre white part is very soft and fluffy.
But what is it?
P.S. Thank you to those who offered suggestions.
It seems definite that it is a protea, but whether it has African or Australian origins I don't know.
It is certainly not a banksia because they have bristly brushes!

I've never seen one before. It sure is different!

The leaves surrounding this bulb look so much like hands gently cradling the flower. What a pretty group of pastels!

It's a plant known as a Protea and it originated in South Africa where it's still very common both in the wild and cultivated. It comes in various shapes, sizes and colours!
I'm not even sure how I know that!

Good that your flower question was answered.
It's a rare and delicate flower with all its intriguing shades of rose red.

Ooooo I know what it is! And what synchronicity - I have three sitting in a vase on my kitchen side. It is a protea. These plants have ancient primitive beginnings. I think they are so amazing - and some species have little furry bits around the tips of the petals. They are new to me (that's why I HAVE to buy them when I see them) and native to Australia.

Honestly I've got no idea what's the name of that flower :P I'm bad at names of flowers except the common ones.
This one looks pretty exotic :) Nice one for RT!
