Melbourne Cup 2011 and the Birdcage

Collage created from Channel 9's coverage of the Melbourne Cup 2011 at Flemington - my TV!
Melbourne Cup Day falls on the first Tuesday in November (last Tuesday).
In Victoria, it is celebrated as a public holiday because it is the climax of the Spring racing carnival season!

And behind the racing stakes are the high fashion stakes.
There is a special venue for the "beautiful people" to gather - invitation only.
It is known as the Birdcage - a series of marquees.
Stores such as Myer have marquees and Saab has returned this year to the Birdcage, but many believe the Emirates marquee is the most exotic!
I have never been to the Melbourne Cup, (nor really is it my kind of experience), but I do watch the happenings on TV!

The first 10 place getters were:
1. Dunaden
2. Red Cadeaux
3. Lucas Cranach
4. Americain
5. Manighar
6. Lost In The Moment
7. Fox Hunt
8. Niwot
9. Unusual Suspect
10. At First Sight
105,979 attended the 2011 Melbourne Cup and witnessed possibly the closest finish in the race's history.
ABC News Online created a LIVE blog of the Melbourne Cup!

The whole of New Zealand stopped to watch the race. I have never won the sweepstake.

I've never been a gambler, but I always loved going to horse races. It's been years now, but I remember the excitement. I wasn't included with the beautiful people, of course, but I had my picture taken with a friend's horse in the winner's circle a couple of times.
I always enjoy your photos, Gemma.

Love the hats. They are smaller that what I usually expect to see at these events. Racing must be a fabulous sport for the rich and famous...and also for the not so rich and famous. I watch all of our country’s races on the tele, but that is as far as I get. genie

Birdcages needs to be large enough to accommodate the motion and daily activities of its inhabitant. However, for practicality, smaller cages are usually preferred. It's important to choose a cage where the bottom can be removed for cleaning and has seed and water catches attached.
