AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes

AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes
I love a sunburnt country / A land of sweeping plains / Of ragged mountain ranges / Of droughts and flooding rains / I love her far horizons / I love her jewel-sea / Her beauty and her terror / The wide brown land for me / ~ Dorothea Mackellar (1885-1968)

I Love the Kookaburra

A kookaburra family regularly visits my Mornington Peninsula world.
Such friendly, knowing little characters.
The kookaburra (also known as laughing jackass) is part of the kingfisher family and is native to Australia and New Guinea.

Knowing character
The kookaburra magic
Reaches the spirit

So what is a friend
One who sings the earth for you
Echo of beauty

I've heard about kookaburra birds for years, but this is the first picture I think I've seen of one! I love it! Wonderful capture for the day, Gemma!

You made me sing the kookaburra song lol. I have never seen one like this in person. They're gorgeous. Visiting from Camera Critters.

Okay....now I WANT them HERE too!! I LOVE these. Wondering just how I can convince someone to stash them on a ship bound for Texas as a stow-away, and release them in our area.

Sweet, sweet!!! Excellent photos Gemma.

Thanks again, for linking up at the Bird D'Pot weekend meme!!

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Merry, merry king of the bush is he
Laugh, Kookaburra! Laugh, Kookaburra!
Gay your life must be

I remember this song sung by an Aussie trained teacher in a class of 9 year-olds. I was one of them many years ago! We used to wonder how such a bird looked like then. Thanks for sharing Gemma!

Love the photos AND the poem!! Used to sing "Kookaburra sits on an old gum tree" when I was a kid, when I really did not know there really WAS such a bird.

Ahhh...we used to sing the kookaburra song at school as a roundelay.
It's a beautiful bird and you are blessed to have them.
Your poem is lovely.

I just remembered a song we sung in 2nd or 3rd grade:

Kookaburra sits on the old gum tree
Merry merry king of the bush is he
Laugh kookaburra laugh kookaburra
Save some gum for me

Ever hear that one? From the first, I thought these birds were the coolest!

How ingenious you are to cover so many prompts with this one sweet poem.

Fun to see the photos and the references. I live in the Sonora Desert, so Kookaburra is completely foreign to me. Lovely write.

A marvellous capture, Gemma - wonderful detail. (We've both chosen Australian "natives" for our post this week. Have a great one!)
