AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes

AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes
I love a sunburnt country / A land of sweeping plains / Of ragged mountain ranges / Of droughts and flooding rains / I love her far horizons / I love her jewel-sea / Her beauty and her terror / The wide brown land for me / ~ Dorothea Mackellar (1885-1968)

A Colourful Tale

Illustration: by Vincent Mathy
Monday's Child #48
~

You think you do not know me
My dearest vegie friends
But I'm the one you bullied
And flung to garden's end

I'm the ugly one you mocked
My dearest vegie friends
The one you said was useless
The artichoke blend

You seem surprised to see me
My dearest vegie friends
All colourful and happy
And my soul's on the mend

You see
A rainbow found me
And lifted up my heart
Gave each chamber colour
Each juicy piece a part

But before the rainbow finished
The rain came tumbling down
The rainbow slipped away
But left behind my gown

So here I am more beautiful
Than any one of you
My heart is there for all to see
And spiky points are few

I hold no lasting grudges
You can't help being you
I'm now your queen and captain
And you're my willing crew

A Rocking Horse

Monday's Child #47 ~ Picture Prompt
~

Rocking horse
Rocking horse
Sail us away
The time has come
To close our day

Rocking horse
Rocking horse
Fly us to dreams
The stars and moon
Are smiling it seems

Rocking horse
Rocking horse
Hold us tight
Keep us warm in
The darkness of night

Rocking horse
Rocking horse
Don't let them cry
When our Queen Mum
Waves us goodbye

At least you and I know
When midnights flow
It's time to go back
To the palace below
And Mum will be there
With her love and care
And we will all wake
With a new day to share

So rocking horse
Rocking horse
Drift us to sleep
And bring us some angels
Our souls to keep
~

Mother Duck

~
Monday's Child #42 ~ Picture Prompt
~

Cooking and dressing and
Shopping and
Smiling
Mother Duck must do what
Mother Duck must do

Cleaning and sewing and
Ironing and
Smiling
Mother Duck must do what
Mother Duck must do

Walking you to swimming school and
Walking you home
Caring for your aches and pains and
Seeing you don't roam

Picnic fun
In the sun
Playing tag together
Flying with the dancing winds
Enjoying any weather

But sometimes in the tiny hours
When you are fast asleep
And I have time to sit and dream
While moonlight shadows creep
I hang a wish upon a star
That I will always keep
Your gentle love
Your sweetest smiles
And never let you weep

The Secrets of Three

Illustration: Florence Edith Storer

Monday's Child #41
~

It feels so good to be outdoors
Under a pretty blue sky
The leaves are dancing
And birds are glancing
And singing as they pass by

It feels so good to feel free
Beyond the rules at home
A picnic lunch
With lots to crunch
And a drink before we roam

Shall we play hide and seek
Among the trees
Or share some ghostly tales
I really don't mind
Whatever the kind
Of game...Do as you please!

We only have just a little time
Before Mum and Dad return
They're only by the river
And we don't want them to be stern

Let's treasure our time in the great outdoors
Our secret club of three
It feels so good to be ourselves
Just the wind
And you and me
~

Night Sailing

Illustration by Ethel Mars and Maud Hunt Squire 1900's from A Children's Garden of Verses

Monday's Child #40
~

My little room is a magic world
A place to live in dreams
My bed becomes a special boat
Sailing the cloudy seas

Just a sparkling thought whisks me there
Anywhere I long to be
A fantasy land where I am king
Or an island where I'm just me

Sometimes I go on adventures
Braving the jungles wild
Seeking all my animal friends
Loving being a child

And sometimes I visit Peter Pan
He's such a crazy guy
Never Never Land is a wondrous place
To walk and run and fly

But then I must sail quietly home
To sleep away the night
Tuck my dreams in my pocket
And smile at morning light

Tea Party

Picture Prompt ~ Tea Party Illustration by: Fernando Falcone~
Monday's Child #38~

Tea party for three
White Rabbit, are there no more
It seems so bizarre

Tea cups and saucers
I count four empty waiting
Do you expect friends

And another thing
Should there be some party food
That would be more fun

Mad Hatter scares me
He seems to be a bully
Why does he do this

Please help me Rabbit
I don't understand this world
Guide me to answers

Basket of flowers
Leave the secret of beauty
Then tip-toe away

Here's the gift of Spring
Remember the light of warmth
Open your cold door

Thursday Poets' Rally ~ Week #36
~

I have the face of a cherub
With eyes that glint with smiles
But I know how to reap
The fears that weep
And build castles in the sands of time

For I am the New Year child
Destined to be your guide
I see your dreams
And hear your sighs
And offer you joy on the next high tide
