Tavistock House

Somehow the signs on this lovely old building in Melbourne don't seem to fit, don't seem right.
Tavistock House Past Names : Norfolk Hotel (1866), Ship Inn Hotel (1836)
It used to be a Coffee Palace and is now heritage listed.
Tavistock House was built for John Tighe as a hotel circa 1850. The architect was Samuel Marlow.
The building was extensively altered and extended during the nineteenth century.
In 1906 it was renovated again, giving its present Edwardian Freestyle form with Art Nouveau detailing.

I was thinking it didn't look like something built in 1866! But I bet it sure stands out on the corner by those newer glass towers.

True the signs do look out of place and not sensitive to the beauty of the building itself.

Interesting how places change names like that through the ages!

Agree --- those businesses should make do some retro signs to go along with the lovely building.

I hope to be back to Scenic Weekends soon... we have been very busy doing remodeling projects since we got back to Florida.... not a bad thing, but not particularly scenic ;>)!

love the vintage building! I noticed a sign advertising one can learn how to fly fish...on the 2nd floor. Hmm do you suppose they cast out the window? just kidding, well I hope not.

That's a really old building for Australia.
Ossie Barber is a funny name.
