It was intended to be an expression of sympathy from Australia to the U.S.
P.S. In response to a number of comments, the work was modelled on Pablo Picasso's Guernica.

Wow what a beautiful memorial. I am always amazed and so impressed by the artwork of high-schoolers. They are so new and up and coming. The work is always so fresh. they take a theme (art or writing or music or even fashion) they start out traditional or with an inspiration and then they tweak it. it's fantastic.
