Welcome Nugget at Melbourne Museum and a Thank You!

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ Last Wednesday I was on a school excursion to Melbourne Museum.
There I photographed this amazing gold nugget ~ at least a reproduction!
The real one, known as the Welcome Nugget, was found in 1858 at Ballarat, north of Melbourne.
The nugget weighed 63kg. of water-worn gold.
It was sold for 10,500 pounds and was exported to London where it was melted down.
But as I gazed at the reproduction, what intrigued me most was the three dimensional shadow effect from the array of museum spot lights! Fascinating!
NOTE: And strangely, between this post and the last one, I have passed the 30,000 mark of visitors from 120 countries.
My own little piece of precious gold!
Thank you so much to all those who have taken time to wander here!

First of all, Gemma, let me congratulate you on your 30,000 visitors from 120 countries! It is amazing isn't it! Your blog is most deserving of it! Next, your photo is terrific! A really stunning shot with all the different shadows! It's history is really fascinating! And, of course, your words match the photo perfectly. Have a great weekend and Happy Valentine's day!

The light plays off the rugged shape of the nugget. Somewhat like a giant gem, the shadows a result of the tricks that light play with our eyes. It is lovely, the real gold rock long since gone. As Oz has so many precious metals within its border, this could be considered a typical find in its day.

You deserve the number of hits you get, as it is a great site, the pictures and poetry wonderful!

Isn't it strange how man has learned to covet such an unusual Earth element...how many lives were destroyed in the name of it and we still covet it, as world monetary values still worship it's worthiness...gimme a bar of chocolate any old day to replace that bar of gold, more to my standards...ha!

And yes dear sister, Spring is readily on the minds of all of us these days, as we look for any sign of it...however being realistic, we know that we have another FULL month to go before then...

But that's the one thing that I do like about winter(the only thing)...it always leads to Spring and makes that season ever so fabulous.

As merchants, this is the time we live for...people are able to travel to our shops, purchase the stuff that makes their spring gardens flourish and sing and just plain get out of the house into the fresh air...ahhhh Spring, time to while away the hours on my porch swing, while Scratchy chases vermin in the tall prairie grasses...ahhh paradise.

But I'm sad that your summer will be ending too, however, if you had snows like we do, I would really feel bad for you...CABIN FEVER is real...and it sucks big time, when you can't leave the house for days on end and the furnace runs continually, the dollar signs go up in smoke, as you know there will be no revenues because of the weather...and why do we live here you ask...guess that's the way of it when the homeland gets in your blood, I'm sure you know what I mean!

Have a wonderful week dear friend and know that I'm thinking of you from across the seas...in my frozen stupor...ha! And a big ol' cupid smooch to you too!!!

It just goes to show that all that glitters is not gold. Intersting post. Love your haiku.

Hi Gemma, that is a seductive treasure indeed. Even the reproduction, I would love to have one.
I do have some fools' gold nuggets that my deceased father had saved. He would tease my mom with them.
